The subject of dowsing is probably the single most discussed and debated topic in metaphysical circles, and there is also a lot of dogma associated with dowsing instruments, too. I send out an instructional pamphlet with every pendulum I sell to make sure each pendulum's new owner has a working understanding of how to use it. Just to be sure, I have the text from that brochure in a "Dowsing Instructions" page on my website, http://www.turtleisland.cc The pamphlets come in handy for the end user both because it is an instructional reminder and it gives contact information in case they need repairs. I am always honored to do rehab work on well-used pendulums because it means they are well loved and utilized.
Dowsing, simply defined, is utilizing a simple instrument to channel the Higher Self, either to obtain "yes or no" answers to simple questions, or to locate objects, or a variety of other simple functions. Dowsing is much like talking to someone on the phone. In this case, the "phone" is your pendulum and the person on the other end of the line is your own Higher Self or Guardian Angel, so you should take time out to center yourself and invoke this intelligence before starting your dowsing session.
I laugh when I see someone barking orders at a pendulum. That isn't dowsing. It certainly isn't channeling one's own divine Higher Self. It is, however, a nice demonstration of telekinesis, or moving things with your own force of will. Most people are telekinetic without realizing it. In dowsing, it is important to detach from the answer and focus on your divine connection in order to bring in accurate answers from the Higher Self. Many people start their dowsing with a prayer asking for divine guidance to create a form of "sacred space" around them and to assist them in getting out of their own way.
he pendulum is a straightforward developmental tool, and dowsing is a developmental method. You are not really supposed to get attached to your pendulum. Over time, you slowly get acclimated to channeling your divine Higher Self to the point where you don't need the instrument any more. At that point, you just access your divinity and move forward!
The important thing is that you start dowsing. Dowsing may be a relative beginner's step in personal development, but it is serious advancement, and is therefore important for everyone. It helps one to not only access the higher spiritual knowledge, develop the right side of the brain to become more intuitive, feel more at peace by channeling the Higher Self, and of course, in the process of all that, get to where one is not so much at the whim of their circumstances because of being led by divine connection. The more people who access their own divine aspects, the better the vibration gets for the whole geographic area. Of course, I also have to point out that dowsing can save you money and aggravation by helping you to make better selections. The uses for dowsing are truly endless.
The possible materials for pendulum construction are unlimited. Some people dowse with their keys. Some dowse with their favorite necklace. Some use a hex bolt or a cotter pin tied to a piece of string. Years ago, when I began my "medicine walk", my guidance was to make pendulums based on "stone medicine". The concept here is that if you are going to carry a pendulum, it is going to be within your electrical field, and therefore should help you feel better and stronger. When constructing my pendulum web page, I just selected a representative few from each variety since the range of possibilities is truly endless. If someone has another combination in mind, I can often make it that way at no extra charge. I can also recommend combinations to assist people. The one constant is that each of my pendulums gets a piece of amethyst to help bring in the higher knowledge.
Since I sell a lot of my pendulums wholesale to teachers and shop owners, I get feedback on what works well for their students. Helen Stembridge of Earth Angel Oils, swears that the amber pendulums are ideal to get people started dowsing. Other than that, she likes having a piece of turquoise on each pendulum, no matter what its basis. Helen teaches dowsing as an adjunct to therapeutic essential oil blending, primarily because it gets people to relax and get out of their analytical left brain, then they are able to custom blend oils for a person based on what they actually need rather than what they think is needed on an intellectual basis. The average student would start by getting permission from the person they are dowsing for, then have their Higher Self connect to that person's Higher Self, the begin by dowsing the oils in a blending cabinet, first by row, and then by the bottles in each row. After individual oils are selected, then the proportion of the oil in the blend is dowsed, usually measured in drops (the proportions for a whole bottle of blend is extrapolated from the number of drops). Then a dropper can be used to extract the oils from the individual bottles and place them in the blending bottle, in the proper order. If the oils are drawn in the proper order, one does not need to clean the dropper between drawing different oils. In many cases, the dowsed oil blends are arrived at more quickly, work better and smell better than attempts at intellectual blending. If the blend arrived at is a little too expensive, the usual method is to find a harmonious "river" oil to put that blend into. A "river" oil is a less expensive pure essential oil, as opposed to a mere carrier oil. This synergistic method not only helps Helen sell lots of essential oil blending cabinets, but also sell lots of pendulums, too! It brings the understanding of therapeutic oil blending into a new arena.
One shop owner in California likes to have a hematite pentacle on each pendulum's handle. Other shop keepers prefer to dowse what pendulums represented on the web page will sell quickly for them. If a shop is local, I can present a selection so the shop owner may dowse with each pendulum individually, asking each one if it is to stay. The pendulums are generally sold primarily through customer experience... in other words, the customer sees one that grabs him/her, then plays with it, then buys it... and in many cases that customer drags a friend into that same shop the next week to look at the pendulums!
